The Ultimate Terraria Guide

For Beginners

Part One

Terraria is a unique game. It manages to balance a nearly perfect flow of progression through bosses and weapon upgrades with a sandbox aspect that gives the player nearly an unlimited amount of possibilities of things to do. Will you fight the queen bee next, or will you build a cozy new house? Will you craft the ultimate weapon, or will you build a cool jungle temple? There really is a lot to do in the game.

But what if you’re a first time player? What if you’re totally lost and have no idea what to do next? Well, in this article and several more that will come out in the future, I intend to answer your questions. Without further ado, welcome to part one of The Ultimate Terraria Guide for Beginners.

So where should we start? Well, let’s start at the very beginning of the game. You have just installed Terraria and are staring at the main menu of the game. What should you do? Well for starters, you should create a world. For beginners, I suggest a medium or large world, with a random evil biome, and a classic mode world, not a journey mode world. Journey mode allows for item duplication and makes the game much faster and, in my opinion, much more dull. Classic mode is much more geared toward beginners than expert or master mode. Once you have your world created, make a character. You can customize your character’s appearance. For your character difficulty, I highly recommend choosing a classic mode character. If you made a journey mode world, you must use a journey mode character.

Got all that done? Now, enter your world. If you chose a classic mode character, you start with some copper tools. Cut down a tree with your axe. Once you have some wood, build a shelter with the wood. To do this, open your inventory and craft a workbench. Then place the workbench down and open your inventory again and look in the bottom left corner of the screen to be able to craft new stuff. Make wooden walls, a door, a table, and a chair. Make a house with these items. See those weird green and blue slimes bouncing around? Kill a few of them with your sword to get gel. Make torches with gel and wood. Place a couple torches in your house. Your finished house should look like this:

When you have made your new house, your guide will move in. He’s the guy with the green shirt who was there when you first spawned into your world. You can show him items and he will tell you what you can craft with them.

Alright, time to explore. Before you explore, I recommend crafting a set of wooden armor. Done that? Now it’s time to walk to the right or left of your house; it doesn’t matter which way. While you travel, you may come across chests. They have important loot. Take everything out of the chest and break the chest so you can store items in it later. If you come across a desert, be sure to break some of the cacti with your axe. You can make useful stuff with cactus, such as armor. Eventually you will come across your evil biome, which is either the:

Corruption

Or…

Crimson

Both of these biomes are very dangerous, especially for the very beginning of the game, but you can try to venture past them nonetheless. If you die and you chose a classic mode character, you should respawn at the world spawn and you will only lose the money that you have on you.

Now, it’s time to mine. To mine, you can either find mouth-shaped caves, or just dig down with your copper pickaxe. Keep digging until you find a cave. In caves, you should hope to find ores, such as iron, silver, gold, or platinum, and chests, that have important loot such as the very notable Hermes Boots that increase player running speed.

Now, craft a furnace with stone, wood, and torches, to be able to smelt ores into bars.

You can use these bars to craft better weapons such as a bow and arrows, a new sword, and better armor sets.

And that’s about it for today’s article. Next, we will talk about how to power up further and progress deeper into the game. I hope you enjoyed the article, and, if you did, consider leaving a like on it. I will see you later.
