Five Terraria Tips for Beginners

Terraria is a game that can be very hard at times (ever fought expert mode Moon Lord?), and with its harder difficulties, expert and master mode, the game can pose quite a challenge to people who are relatively new to the game, and, sometimes, even experienced players. That’s why I’m here today to present five incredibly helpful tips to make your Terraria Journey easier.

Number Five: Always Have Wood

Always having wood may seem like a given, considering that wood is used to make a lot of important items, such as workbenches and platforms. But, I thought I’d mention this to anyone who chops the bare minimum amount of trees, like I did for a while. Extra wood is useful anywhere, and is especially useful in places like the underground while mining, because it can be used to make torches and platforms, two essential for mining. Wood can also be useful when making NPC housing. Maybe you want to make a house or a spawn point but don’t have any trees around. Wood is just a very good resource to have a couple hundred of with you at all times.

Number Four: Have A Potion Farm

Many people, when playing through Terraria, build some sort of herb or potion farm. But you might not realize just how important having one is. Potion farms allow you to make various potions (duh) used in combat, mining, and even building. For a couple of my recent playthroughs, I have built a basic herb farm as early as possible in order to be able to easily obtain the essential potions for boss fights and to make mining easier. This has benefitted me and the friend I played with for each of those playthroughs, as it, especially in expert mode, made fighting bosses and finding life crystals and chests much easier. For a basic herb farm, I suggest making a small array of platforms and putting clay pots on the platforms.

Number Three: Use Pylons

Pylons are a large part in the more recent 1.4 update. Pylons are small structures that can be bought for around 10 gold from NPCs when their happiness level is high enough and they live in a town, which is an area with two or more NPCs living in it. Pylons allow the player to teleport to other biomes in the world, as they are biome based, and they allow for very efficient travel, especially in large generated worlds. It helps a lot to set up multiple towns relatively early on in the game and buy the biomep-respective pylon so that you can teleport around your world at no cost besides the setup and the 10 gold for each of them.

Number Two: Build Spawn Points

Spawn points allow you to respawn anywhere you want to, so you don’t have to make as long a journey to make it back where you died. You can make a spawn point by making a basic house, but replace the chair with a bed. You can then set your spawn at the bed. So, why is setting spawn points so important, especially in multiplayer worlds? Well, the main reason is for when you are doing something dangerous. When you and possibly one or two of your friends are fighting a boss, let’s say Duke Fishron, and one of them dies, it is good to have a spawn point near the ocean so that your friend can spawn back where the fight is and continue helping you to fight. What makes setting your spawn before fighting a boss even more important is that you cannot use Pylons during events; it just tells you to “defeat the current threat” before you can teleport. You can also use a spawn point right outside of the dungeon so that, when you inevitably die in the dungeon (don’t worry, it happens to everyone) you spawn ready to re-enter the dungeon.

Number One: Play with Friends

Terraria is a very fun game, even when one plays by themselves, but having just one or two friends join your world makes the game infinitely more entertaining. It gives you someone to talk to, someone to play the game with. Inviting a friend to play with you can refresh the game for someone who has played the game alone for a while, as it makes boss fights more fun, gives you a person to talk to, and, if they are new to the game, it gives you someone to teach the game to. This tip can also be applied to many other games, such as Minecraft, Fortnite, and basically any other game that has a multiplayer option. And keep in mind that his friend doesn’t have to be someone that you know. It can be someone who you invited to your Xbox party who also wanted to play Terraria with someone. It can be someone who you saw wearing Terraria Merch at your local Walmart; it can be anyone. Just make sure to be safe when talking to them, and make sure not to tell them anything private such as your address (I know that this is common knowledge, but I still feel like it is an important message).

Your Terraria experience can be significantly more enjoyable if you follow these five important tips for beginners. But don’t take it all from me. Enjoy Terraria how you want to. These are just the things that I do to make my playthroughs more enjoyable. So, with these ideas in mind, Terraria fans have fun playing.
